One of the best tools I always recommend is the Google’s Webmaster Tools. If you want to understand how Google sees your website, then first create a Webmaster account.

Add your main website, including subdomains to make a complete analysis of all your pages.

If you are new to SEO, you can’t expect to understand the features in the Webmaster Tool. This tool, somehow requires you to be a little techy, especially when checking site errors such as bad links and duplicate content.

For basics, you can start by first checking your site performance. Just click the site performance review and you’ll see whether your page is slowing down. A low score would indicate that your website has low performance and this is probably why you are not getting traffic at all.

When your website is slowing down, it means you have certain web errors that you don’t see through your eyes alone.

The next think you want to do is check broken links and content duplicate issues. Just head to the HTML Improvements section. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of wonders about Google analytics.

Google analytics is an awesome tool you can use to track website performance and measure the number of unique visitors on your website.

To start using Google Analytics, just create an account and configure your site. Once done, you can start navigating through its different features.

Google Analytics is a lot easier to learn than the Webmaster toolbar. In any case, you’ll need to learn how to use both for your website’s future.

So once you have Google Analytics account, head to the dashboard and you will see specific subsets of data. These include the number of unique views, bounce rate, and sessions by country.

To see more specific data about your visitors, just click on Visitors tab and you will see the demographic. A good number of unique visitors to your site means that you are starting to gain traffic. 

You can see which content is giving you the most traffic by clicking on the Pages tab.  Normally, you’ll want to keep the pages that are working well. But if you see poor performing pages, then you will eventually need to take them down.

If you have an SEO campaign and want to see how well it is performing, you can access the advanced segments and see which campaign is doing well.
